California (pronounced /kælɨˈfɔrnjə/ ( listen)) is the most populous state in the United States, and the third largest by area. California is the second most populous sub-national entity in the Americas, behind only São Paulo, Brazil. It is located on the West Coast of the United States, and is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the northeast, Arizona to the southeast, the Mexican state of Baja California to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Its four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco. The state is home to the nation's second and sixth largest census statistical areas as well as eight of the nation's fifty most populous cities. California has a varied climate and geography, and a diverse population.

California is the third-largest U.S. state by land area, after Alaska and Texas. Its geography ranges from the Pacific coast to the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the east, to Mojave desert areas in the southeast and the RedwoodDouglas fir forests of the northwest. The center of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, one of the most productive agricultural areas in the world. California is the most geographically diverse state in the nation, and contains the highest (Mount Whitney) and lowest (Death Valley) points in the contiguous United States. Almost 40% of California is forested, a high amount for a relatively arid state.

Beginning in the late 18th century, the area known as Alta California was colonized by the Spanish Empire. In 1821, Mexico, including Alta California, became the First Mexican Empire, beginning as a monarchy, before shifting to a republic. In 1846 a group of American settlers in Sonoma declared the independence of a California Republic. As a result of the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded California to the United States. It became the 31st state admitted to the union on September 9, 1850.

In the 19th century, the California Gold Rush brought about dramatic social, economic, and demographic change in California, with a large influx of people and an economic boom that caused San Francisco to grow from a hamlet of tents to a world-renowned boomtown. Key developments in the early 20th century included the emergence of Los Angeles as center of the American entertainment industry, and the growth of a large, state-wide tourism sector. In addition to California's prosperous agricultural industry, other important contributors to the economy include aerospace, petroleum, and information technology. If California were a country, it would rank among the ten largest economies in the world, with a GDP similar to that of Italy. It would be the 35th most populous country.

A. i live in san diego but i have gone to los angeles and san francisco, cali's largest cities. but i wouldn't live anywhere else but san diego. what i really like about SD is the weather, the people, activities and the lifestyle. the weather is sunny year round and we can go to the beach every day if we want to and u never get bored. i guess the atmosphere of the city and just the idea of living in california maybe even makes me say "don't you wish you lived in california?" it's just really cool, the beaches, very nice people especially around the coast and downtown areas. a variety of cultures and everyone just going about their business in a big city but in a relaxed fashion. definitely move to san diego because LA is just like a big city… [cont.]

How is it that California and Oregon have a 9%+ income tax and Washington has no income tax?
Q. I live in San Francisco and pay California's (in my opinion) outrageous 9.3% tax rate. In looking around I notice that Oregon has a 9% top rate while Nevada and Washington have no income tax. I know that Oregon has no sales tax, so that sort of explains things there. But can someone explain for me the basics of why California appears to be so much more expensive than Nevada and Washington? Is there some way as a California resident I can take advantage of something to avoid paying what appears to be thousands of dollars more than I would pay if I moved to Seattle? Alternately, is there some tax that they pay in Washington that I'm not considering? Finally, is it just that the California government is stupid and inefficient, or are they… [cont.]

A. Most of the difference has to do with Prop 13's effect on California. While anyone who purchases a home pays taxes on the current value of the property, someone who has lived in the same home for years is locked in at a much lower rate. For example, know of someone who purchased home in 1976 for $42,000. Property taxes are less that $250 a year. My property in Oregon is on the tax roles at $85000 and I pay $1300 a year. Like Cali, my tax increase every year at a minimum rate, but in Washingotn that's not the case. That said, yes, you can save tax dollars in Washington or Oregon over Cali. But you don't have the weather, job oppertunities, entertainment or sports activities that large numbers of people generate. For me, none of the… [cont.]

What are the possible consequesces of California failing to raise 7 billion in short term municipal bond sales?
Q. Since money is not funding any California state agencies across the board 10 percent cuts in services are occurring. Also instead of paychecks state employees are getting IOUs. Could state agencies collapse like schools, hospitals, universities, sheriff departments, prisons and public transportation agencies? Could California go bankrupt? Could real unemployment in California reach 20 percent (12 percent now)? Could lawlessness raise crime and murder rates by triple if prisions and police departments close shop?

A. California has been living on its credit card, just like its liberal brother New York. Both will pay very dearly for their excess and living beyond their means for many of the last 40 years (especially the last 10). That will not stop them from shaking their cup in the direction of the Federal govt. Both states are liberal bastions who spend heavily on entitlements they cannot, and never could afford. When times are good they spend like drunken sailors, when times are bad, they don't stop the spending, hence they are totally going down the toilet for years to come. The effects of this hangover will be felt for many years to come.
